Cross Sector Collaboration between Corporates and Goodwill Social Work Centre, Madurai, India : Our experiences

Goodwill Social Work Centre is an Indian Non-governmental organisation registered as a Society/Charity under the Tamilnadu Societies Registration Act 27 of 1975, Government of Tamilnadu {India} and Foreign Contribution (Regulations) Act 1976, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India in order to be eligible to receive donations from International funding organisations, Corporares,individual donors and philanthropists. Our Society's Registration number is: 112/1981 and our FCRA number is 075940124. It is duly registered under section 12-A {b} of the Income Tax Act 1961. We regularly submit our annual returns, reports and audited statements of accounts to the Government of Tamilnadu and Government of India as per the above legal enactments. Goodwill social work centre has been working in the areas of children's rights, children’s rights through artwork, Children’s environmental health rights, Intensive family preservation for dysfunctional families, non-formal employment training for youth, humanitarian aid, community technology services, environment education and action, social research, NGO capacity building, Global Links Initiative(UK)’s networking in Tamilnadu(India) and NGO consultancy.Causes supported by the Centre are wide ranging from social philanthropy to social development in the spirit of the organisation's aims of professionalism based on the principles of scientific humanism in line with the professional social work model in the management of issues concerning children, youth,women,dysfunctional families,NGOs and civil society groups.The Centre is highly professional in its approach and its methods are underpinned by a strong academic research ethos. Highly impressed by the professionalism in GOODWILL’s governance and management of programmes,the Global Links Initiative( www.glinet.org) ,a registered company and a charity in the United Kingdom has entered into a partnership agreement with GOODWILL on 6th October 2007 to work together to provide services and capacity building programmes for GLI Networkers in Tamilnadu,India.

The Goodwill Social Work Centre has been actively involved in partnering with multinational companies and International funding organisations in taking up cross sector collaborative development projects for children, youth and women since 1996.

The first CSR project was launched by the Goodwill Social Work Centre in 1996 in partnership with the US based DuPont South Asia Limited, Madurai under Safety Health and Environment (SHE) award(1996-1998) for organising rights based environment education and communication programme for school children at Therkkutheru village,Madurai,India.Theprogramme components comprised 1.environment rights education and training 2. Participatory training 3. Field study and exposure visits 4.Media interventions (Traditional and modern methods of communication applications). It is a proud moment for us that the Goodwill social work centre was declared as one of the four international winners of “Panda IT Aid,2006”, Panda Software International, Spain( http://www.pandasoftware.com) to create community technology centres for children and young adults in low and moderate income families in and around Madurai, India. As CEO of the Goodwill social work centre I have been instrumental in winning the most prestigious “Panda IT Aid 2006 Initiative: Panda Software Digital Solidarity Grants Program” for the Goodwill social work centre awarded by Panda Software International, Spain. The Panda IT Aid Project has been managed by a team of professionally trained social workers, Development professionals and IT training specialists headed by Dr.J.Christopher Daniel,Executive Director and Project holder. In recognition of our achievements in providing digital opportunities for children and young adults in low and moderate income communities through our Community Technology Centres, supported by Panda Software International(Panda Security)Spain, the INFOSYS BPO Limited,( www.infosys.com/bpo) ,a global IT company,Bangalore,India has selected our organisation for the donation of 10 computer systems under the CSR-computer donation program 2010. The computers donated by INFOSYS BPO Ltd have been added to our Community Technology Centres located in three places within our project area,which are being used by children and youth under our 'Non-formal Employment Training project'.It is indeed a feather in GOODWILL's cap! We are really proud of this achievement! Our CSR partnership initiative under the aegis of E.I DuPont India Pvt Ltd is the ‘Life skills-based hygiene education for School Children in the Corporate’s adopted village, Madurai,India during 2013-2014. This is a pilot project which focuses on empowering children with information dissemination through the use of traditional and modern media of communications. The curriculum includes children rights with a focus on environmental health rights, water, sanitation and waste, personal and food hygiene, water and sanitation related diseases that have an impact on health and facilities for water, sanitation and hygiene within schools, households and community.

Our experiences have shown that the cross sector collaboration between Corporates and Goodwill social work centre has not only been partly 'philanthropic' ,'transactional' and’ but mostly developmental’. We are expectantly looking for more business collaboration for social development activities in rural and urban areas in our project region in state of Tamilnadu, India.
