Founder’s Profile


Prof.Dr J. Christopher Daniel (born in India, 1947) is the founding Executive Director of the Goodwill social work centre (NGO), Madurai, India. He is a former Collegiate Professor of social work and Human Resources Management at the Madurai Institute of social sciences,(affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University, India) Madurai, India. He received his master’s degree in Social work with human resources management (HRM) as a field of specialisation from the Loyola College (University of Madras), Chennai, India in 1971 and Ph. D in social work/HRM from the Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, India in 1988.He holds a Certificate in International interdisciplinary Course on Children’s rights awarded by the University of Ghent, Belgium in 1996.

With his wide academic and professional experience for 33 years as a Professor of Social Work and Human Resources Management at the Madurai Institute of Social Sciences, Madurai, India{1972-2005} and 5 years as a Visiting Professor of Social work/HRM and Senior Advisor-Master of Social Work programme at Department of Social Sciences, Lady Doak College,(an autonomous college affiliated to the Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, India), Madurai, India{2005-2010} he has trained hundreds of young women and men in professional social work practice, social entrepreneurship, human resources management and NGO management at the post graduate level. He has also served as a Visiting Professor of the Department of Management Studies(M.B.A) and the Department of Social work at The American College,((an autonomous college affiliated to the Madurai Kamaraj University,Madurai,India), Madurai, India during 2005-2006.

Dr. Christopher is a free lance writer and he has to his credit more than 150 articles on various social issues including children's rights, and human resources management issues published in national and international journals, books and web magazines and websites. He has widely traveled abroad to present scientific papers in international conferences and seminars. He has served as Human Resources Management Educator and research consultant and involved in HRD training activities.

His special areas of interest include Professional social work practice, Human resources management, NGO /Civil society governance and management, Project management, training and capacity building for NGOs, Human rights training including child rights, social research etc. He has had wide professional experience in designing curriculum on Social work, Human resources management, HRD training and Development, Family Life Management, Environmental education for children and Child Rights education and training for school children etc. He has had extensive experience in organising an Intensive Family Preservation (family support services) programmes for dysfunctional families. He has been actively involving himself in organising NGO networking and capacity building programmes for Indian NGO administrators and development professionals in Tamilnadu, India.

He has served as Lead Researcher of various social research studies undertaken by the Goodwill Social work Centre (NGO), Madurai, India. He was appointed authorised Research Guide by the Madurai Kamaraj University for Ph.D Candidates in the field of Social work and HRM and he has so far guided doctoral candidates who have qualified themselves for the award of Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) of the Madurai Kamaraj University. As a Social work Academic turned Social entrepreneur he was prompted to set up a charity in 1981 to work with children, youth and young women and their families in distress with an aim to apply the ‘Goodwill social work model’ as a practice mode and an approach, which he has developed.

He has made a significant contribution to humanity at large through his contribution and operation of the Goodwill social work centre, which has been working in the areas of children's rights, children’s rights through artwork, Children’s environmental health rights, Intensive family preservation for dysfunctional families, non-formal employment training for youth, humanitarian aid, community technology services, environment education and action, social research, NGO capacity building, Global Links Initiative(UK)’s networking in Tamilnadu(India) and NGO consultancy. As Project Leader of the ‘Corporates-Goodwill Social Work Centre partnership initiative he has been actively involved in partnering with multinational companies and International funding organizations in taking up cross sector collaborative development projects for children, youth and women since 1996.

Causes supported by the Goodwill Social Work Centre are wide ranging from social philanthropy to social development in the spirit of the organisation's aims of professionalism based on the principles of scientific humanism in line with the professional social work model in the management of issues concerning children, youth, women, dysfunctional families,NGOs and civil society groups. The Centre is highly professional in its approach and its methods are underpinned by a strong academic research ethos.

His academic teaching and capacity building initiatives for hundreds of his students have provided him with an enriching experience to establish a social enterprise in Madurai, India to practise what he has professed. As the Chief functionary of the organisation he has been personally responsible for the organisation's local and international acclaim and achievements. Our flagship programme 'Intensive family preservation project' under the aegis of OZ Child -Children Australia launched in 1991 has resulted in our organisation implanting various development programmes for children, youth and women in dysfunctional families,NGOs and civil society groups in partnership with a number of international funding and networking organisations and Governmental organisations in India.

He was instrumental in winning the most prestigious “Panda IT Aid 2006 Initiative: Panda Software Digital Solidarity Grants Program” for the Goodwill social work centre awarded by Panda Software International, Spain. Through his fine initiative the Goodwill social work centre was declared as one of the four international winners of “Panda IT Aid,2006”, Panda Software International, Spain( http://www.pandasoftware.com) to create community technology centres for children and young adults in low and moderate income families in and around Madurai,India.

As a Social entrepreneur he has not only tried to involve help from friends and organisations and the world but also brought global knowledge to help locally. With a background of implementing new ideas that revitalise, challenge and grow local communities he has created a groundbreaking social enterprise that without doubt touches and enriches the lives of children, youth, women, dysfunctional families and also builds NGO capacity through networking initiatives.

He has served as the GLI (UK) Representative in Tamilnadu of the Global Links Initiative, United Kingdom, and (http://www.glinet.eu) and actively involved in NGO networking and capacity building initiatives among the GLI (UK) Tamilnadu networkers during 2006-2009.

He has served as a Member on the ESF Pool of Reviewers to assess research proposals in the areas of Social Sciences and Humanities, for the period of 01 May 2010 - 30 April 2012, European Science Foundation (www.esf.org), 1, quai Lezay-Marnésia, BP 90015, 67080 Strasbourg Cedex, France. He has been identified as a potential member on the ESF Pool of reviewers on the basis of his track record of high-quality reviewing and his valuable achievements with regard to the participation in ESF funded activities during 2008-2009.
